Reached the Plateau Already?!

Hi guys! It's Monday again and what does that mean? It's another "LBN Day." As you may remember from my previous post, I was sucked out of energy and my soul left my body by the end of the session. What caused that? The reasons are down below.

Problems: ❗❓

  • Unfamiliar with phonics

  • Self doubt (Am I doing this right? Can I even do this right?)

  • Huge difficulty explaining long and difficult words, or words that isn't simply an object or action

  • Can't explain certain sounds

  • Feel alone (nobody seems to have any problem… is it just me?)

As a result, I ended off the session feeling guilty, confused, and... alone. During the huddle, everyone shares what went well and what didn't go well one by one. When I listen to other people's experience, I can't help but feel weird in the inside.
How's everyone doing so well? Are they not experiencing any difficulties? How come they all know how to connect different lessons together?

I don't know if other mentors are having a smoother experience because they have buddies in a younger grade level (Karl is grade 5, so technically the material I teach would need to be harder? I assume?) or if they are just that good.

Later the night, I decided to learn phonics first before I teach it. (The truth is I can't teach him if I don't know it myself.) I started with short and long vowel sounds since I believe that would be helpful when I teach pronunciation. I would like to be able to point at a specific part of a word, tell him it's a short u sound and have him understand what I mean. I learned this by watching a YouTube video that's meant for childrenπŸ˜…πŸ˜…. Since Quizlet was effective last time, I decided to create flashcards of words that I think he won't know from the new book, hoping that would give him a heads-up.

Solutions:

  • Explored the phonics folder in the virtual program shared drive

    • Read the directory

    • Read each skill's intro in the phonics resources document

    • Got a basic understanding of what they are

  • Searched and watched a video on YouTube on short and long vowels (kids video)

    • Made a lot more sense

Kid's Academy!

  • Created a Quizlet with vocab that are possibly challenging in the new book
  • Created folder with everything needed

With no further to do, let's see how the session on the 26th went!

Journal #6- Oct, 26 2020

The weekend just passed and today is another "LBN day." Like usual, I opened the necessary documents and YouTube videos on my computer before leaving for school. I also left early to arrive home. Originally, I actually made it on time, but my laptop decided to act up on me when I turned it back on!

ARGHHH❗❗❗

I tried to type the password into the "join zoom meeting" page, but it told me that I'm not allowed into the meeting. I was so confused and on top of that, I couldn't even close that notification. My computer didn't respond when I tried to cancel the application. After a minute or two, I decided to just restart the laptop, but even the apple icon didn't work!! I would click it and the menu would appear for a split second and disappear again.

I ultimately forced it to shut down with the touch id button. At that time, it was already 3:40. Five more minutes before buddies enter. I reopened the computer and it no longer acts weird, or at least I thought so…

I'm so done🌝

During the session, I realized that my buddy seemed tired and distracted, but I couldn't blame him as I felt the same way. The computer incident sucked my energy and patience away. I forced myself to sound upbeat, but it slowly faded away as my computer began being weird AGAIN. When I watched a video on short and long vowels with him, my computer made these weird buzzing noises. They were LOUD!!

Buzzingggg

The sounds paused at times, but it was loud and distracting most of the time. I thought he came from the centre or right side of the MacBook, but I wasn't sure if it came from my computer or my buddy's device. Apparently he could hear it as well, but I couldn't do anything about it. I ended up lifting the laptop up.

I don't know why I did that… it kind of helped, I guess?

I can toTaLLy see you thereπŸ˜…
The bottom felt slightly hot by the way. Though frustrated from the sudden and annoying issues of my computer, I tried to finish the remaining activities I prepared for him. I couldn't see his face clearly because he sat in front of the bright window, but from his tone and gestures, I could tell he was not a slight bit excited. I had to pause the 5-minute video because he talked to his family in Japanese several times. He said everything's alright, but I didn't really think so…

We are still on the "Soccer is a Kick" book, but again, we only got through 2 more pages. I feel that we aren't making any progress… I've gone over the flashcards, teaching him the pronunciation and definition, but he pronounced new words in the book the same as before. I'm the type that doesn't always get something on the spot, but would understand it inside out after a short while. I believe that's how most of us including Karl operate, but at the same time, I am concerned whether I'm teaching well enough.

Does he just need more time? Or… did he even understand what I said?

At the end, I asked whether he wanted a break. I thought he said tic tac toe, but when I asked again to confirm he went "no, no, no…" He really hates tic tac toe 🀣🀣🀣. We played a game where I gave him a letter and he would give me 5 words that start with that letter. To be honest, it was so boring but I really had nothing else in mind. When it was my turn, he said z and I started listing some words. I said Zoe and I asked him if he has ever heard of that name. He said no, so I thought ok I can talk a little more about it. Guess what? He said "No, no, no thanks."

Problems: ❗❓

  • Technical issues:

    • MacBook wouldn't respond

    • Zoom gave a pop up tab notifying me that I'm not allowed into the meeting

    • Couldn't cancel the pop up tab/ stuck on my screen

    • Wanted to restart my computer, but the apple icon on the upper left-hand corner didn't work (the power off menu would appear for a split second and disappear again)

    • Weird, loud, low buzzing noises, sometimes paused but mostly continuous, from the center or right side of MacBook

    • Slightly hot in the bottom

  • 10 minutes late

  • Tired and REALLY distracted buddy

    • Kept looking out behind his device

    • I think he's in the same room as the rest of his family because he kept talking to them in Japanese
