The Beginning...

Hi! 👋 I'm Jessalyn and welcome to the first OFFICIAL post of my blog!

In the coming 2 months, I will be sharing about the experience of being a reading mentor in a non-profit organization called "Learning Buddies Network" or LBN for short. This won't be too too long, but you might see it more like a journal and diary. Also, please be very patient with me as I navigate my way around this endeavour to grow and improve myself! Now let's stop the blabbering and cut straight to the "meat"...

Journal #1- Sept. 18, 2020

After debating for a good whole day, here I am. I decided to apply to be a reading mentor for "Learning Buddies Network". I actually learnt about LBN last year at Club's Day, but it was too late to sign up for the Fall Program and I had to wait for the Spring term. However, my schoolwork and fear of stepping outside my comfort zone prohibited me from actually taking this opportunity. In the past months though, the pandemic taught me a very important lesson.

"There's no time to wait around. Just do it."

I realized time won't wait for you. We never know what will happen next week, tomorrow, or even today. When we procrastinate and say things like "I'll just do ______ tomorrow/next week/later," we don't really know if we have the time for it. The best we can do is just do it, so with this mindset, I decided to apply for LBN after debating for a day or two (very indecisive I know😂) despite still having that fear of not being able to teach reading properly. I always wanted to teach math because I'm more confident about that, but only the reading program is available in the virtual program. For even greater motivation, I dragged a friend along although I knew we won't be in the same time slot.

Journal #1- Oct. 1, 2020

The program will be starting very soon. In the past few weeks, other mentors and I attended a 3 hour-long training session, a zoom training session, as well as a short phone interview. Not going to lie, the 3-hour long training session was draining. I sat there from 5 to 8, being confused about all that they are saying while being genuinely astonished by how many mentors there were. I've never tutored a child before, not to mention doing it over a virtual platform, Zoom! I have never used Zoom before because we use Teams for school. Even going through the training manual kind of scares me. Everything seems so structured and organized, but there is still a lot of material that I'm not familiar with. Knowing my personality, the fact that I'm even here is a big jump for me. I'm trying something new and I'm pushing my limits despite my fear. I'm still slightly confused about the structure of the sessions and how we plan for them, but let's see what happens when we get there!
