Reflection!
Hey guys! It's an unusual day for me to post on this blog since there wasn't LBN today, but as the course of CLC B slowly comes to an end, I would like to briefly share how my experience has been so far!
Essential Question:
Goals and What I Want to Gain:
How I Attempted and Documented This:
Challenges:
When it comes to failures, I can go on and on… You see, I'm not very experienced with tutoring nor am I so good with children, so I encountered a number of problems and found myself in the deep hole of failure.
Self doubts and fear of comparison/ criticism
Test of patience and creativity
Unable to spark that enthusiasm and bond with a grade 5 boy
Accepting the responsibility
Finding a balance between being a friend and a teacher
Successes:
Overcame my doubts and gained confidence in my role
Reached out for help when needed
Accepted criticism and reflected on feedbacks
Practiced, practiced, and practiced until I’m comfortable!
Able to modify recommended strategies to make it more fun and less boring!
Ex. whiteboard strategy
Experiencing that joy and rewarding feeling during little moments when he demonstrates improvement or expresses gratitude
No longer see it as an obligation
Knowing how to set expectations as a mentor while being encouraging as a friend
Core Competencies:
- Communication
I can present information and ideas to an audience I may not know
Critical thinking
I can monitor my progress and adjust my actions to make sure I achieve what I want
Positive personal and cultural identity
I understand i will continue to develop new abilities and strengths to help me meet new challenges
Social Responsibility
I can solve some problems myself and can identify when to ask for help
What I learned:
What did I gain out of this? And to answer my essential question, “How can I be an effective mentor?”:
Assertive attitude (dismiss my fear and uneasiness from asking for help)
Perseverance (Anything can be achieved with dedication and hard work)
Problem solving skills (I learned to handle troubling behaviour and endorse a positive attitude when I’m responsible for my buddy during the 45 minute sessions)
Creativity (think outside the box to shape the lesson plans to fit the personal needs of my buddy)
COMMUNICATION SKILLS (dedicating time to understand a concept so I can explain it without backtracking, fumbling, or being confusing)
How can I take this further? -->
Before this capstone project, I was torn between studying business and sciences
I’m more interested in business, but I’m also not very confident in the skills that are highly necessary in this field like public speaking and leadership skills.
However, through this capstone project, I realized that skills can indeed be developed!
They shouldn’t be a reason why I want to study one thing or don’t want to study another thing
I learned that my choice should be based on where my passion lies within, and that will open my eyes to more programs and career opportunities
